Race Review

Hullavington 20 - 24th March 2020

Where: Wiltshire

Distance: 20 miles

Terrain: Undulating on open but quiet country roads

Organiser: Stampede Sports

Cost: £28-£30

I really enjoyed this race. It was my first time running a 20 miler and its position in the calendar is perfect for those training for a spring marathon (I was building up to the London Marathon).

It's a small race with around 120 people taking part. It's raced on open roads, but on a Sunday on country lanes that was never an issue. Plus, there were marshals at all key intersections keeping an eye on the traffic for the runners.

Parking is on the street in the small village of Hullavington. I'd recommend turning up a bit early just to save the added stress of trying to find a space. Race collection was in the village hall - all very straightforward. And with such a small field, toilet queues were kept to a minimum.

The course is undulating, there's no doubt about that. I'm no fan of hills but I found the route ok, with only one hill that was a bit of a show stopper, i.e. it knocked me out of my rhythm. But it was short and sharp and over very quickly. However, I did hear a number of people at the finish talking about the course being more hilly than they were expecting. I think the views and the impressive country homes help take my mind off the inclines.

At the finish, there was a well stocked snack table and a nice medal that links back to the local area's connection with the air force.

I'd really recommend this event. It was well organised, perfectly placed in the calendar and a great opportunity to race a distance that is pretty rare.
